CBI career based instruction until just like with any student whether special education or general education I was trying to prepare kids for what's coming next in their lives the CBI trips help students to understand how they can navigate the world when real life really hit you know when they have to go to a store and purchase things when you need to be able to navigate where to find things in a pharmacy getting around strip malls and things like that navigating public transit and so Lori does a great job at the early stage with our kids of starting at 11 years old I'm up helping these students prepare for that once they hit that later in life it was about three or four years into my teaching when I realized that academics were not always the most important thing for kids that they needed to learn things other than academics and another teacher in myself at the time decided that we wanted to focus on daily living skills and skills that they would need after school when they graduate at age 22 so we started asking around in a lot of districts were already having their kids go out into the community to learn some functional skills Martin owner of our Palos Verdes Transit asked us if we would pick up a special group they're going on outings and with interested in coming in here and I had said no problem and I got to meet the kids and I'm I met Lori and it was just exciting to see the kids coming out and they were excited cuz it was some of their first time being in a bus normally the normal stop is down the big hill here but because I'm over the years I've had numerous kids in wheelchairs they did allow the bus to pull right up into the front of the school and to pick us up and they did give us a reduced rate of $1 old ways instead of $2 will Swayze so once we figured it out we've been doing it ever since then we go every other Friday so I've been doing them for the past maybe 12 or 13 years as far as the transit I did try to make it a smoother ride and smoothest Savoy just to get them where they need to go and pick him up and get excited seeing them in there waiting for me in all the years we've been going 12 or 13 years has been Miss Juanita and she's Amazing Race shine 5 minutes late or 5 minutes early she is always out there looking out for us black eyes when I start picking up the kids they don't give I contact or they don't say hi or they don't know how to feel bear boxing everything is like a little small accomplishment for them you know which I get excited as well with them and we said I couldn't job you know you did it to put the money in yourself you know as they're going on their learning to do that again dependent let me touch you know they could do this I could do this to you wait to just happened just clicked she love my kids and it's just it's been an amazing experience cuz we start off our day with her and it's just a great way to start a Friday campus and there's Miss Juanita so happy and she can bring the kids treats then it's good it's cool it's a cool thing delete my her I was doing what she tells in you know being with a girl McKesson I'm happy to know that she's such a loving person and caring Dora Jackson is amazing she is a mom to a group of students here every day she's a mom and an educator today's kids she does everything that she can to prepare these kids for life and jelly leather riding the the Metro buses now and I'll see and I get all excited seeing them the other day that you speak with them here and it's nice to see them going on all those things that we start work John in middle school and continues in high school and goes on to the transition to Independence program really starts building on all this feels out so I'll need one stage out of the school system at age 22 I haven't won any big Awards but I think once they finish the program you know kind of just the things that they have learned is kind of an award in itself knowing that people are really caring about others and that how they really do put I'm just what they should do but they go above and beyond to help each other and everything is wonderful to see such a tight-knit and moving machine like that that program they doing that it does so much great alien spiders I'm a grandma that I love kiss are you working pants that you're working on bigger picture items he might be working on Grant applications electric buses even some folks I know we're working with scooters but this really kind of dial down to why we do this and that's the help to help all members of the society and what's interesting is this create a positive feeling among everyone who works on this project for my staff to the vehicle operators to her staff you know at the end of a Friday when you transfer these folks you feel good
