Language Arts Assignments During School Closure
Since we can’t have the Freedom Walkers Vocabulary and Comprehension Test, this is the alternate assignment:
FW#11 Summary/Vocabulary Freedom Walkers: Based on what you remember, please write a 1-2 page/at least 2 (indented) paragraph summary of Freedom Walkers. In the summary, please use and underline the 20 vocabulary words (see FW#3 handout for the vocabulary words/definitions). Be sure that you do this right away so that you don’t forget the content. This can be shared or emailed to me on April 6th, if we do not return to school on that day (email@example.com)
Log in to your school portal, and click on “McGraw Hill” and then “Launch” your Study Sync textbook. Click the assignment titled “First Read: Celebrities as Heroes.” Watch the “Intro” video. Then, click the “Read” tab. As we have done many times before, please read the articles, and define the boldfaced vocabulary words in the text using the context clues to figure out the meanings (click each word to select it and it will say “Highlight”. Type the definition into the box and then click “create note”). When you are done, check the words in the dictionary and edit as needed. Finally, answer the “Think” Questions 1-3 using the ACE (answer, cite evidence, explain) method with quotes from the text (3-5 sentences each). Finally, click “submit” to turn in the assignment.
Log in to your school portal, and click on “McGraw Hill” and then “Launch” your Study Sync textbook. Click the assignment titled “Arguments and Claims.” Please watch the video, read the model and answer the multiple choice questions. When finished click “submit to turn in the assignment.
Log in to your school portal, and click on “McGraw Hill” and then “Launch” your Study Sync textbook. Click the assignment titled “Close Read: Celebrities as Heroes.” Click the “Read” tab and reread the articles, and answer the 5 Focus Questions into the text. These questions are found at the top of the articles. Remember to click and drag to select the evidence, then answer the questions in the textbox (just as you did with the vocabulary definitions) by clicking “create note.” Also, remember that you cannot reselect vocabulary words that are already highlighted. Do not delete your definitions, just don’t reselect those words when making new text boxes. (Do not submit this assignment until you have completed next Monday and Tuesday’s assignment because they are all connected).
Please note that these directions will not make much sense until you complete the activities and read the directions on Study Sync.
Log in to your school portal, and click on “McGraw Hill” and then “Launch” your Study Sync textbook. Then, click the assignment titled “Close Read: Celebrities as Heroes.” Finally, click the “Writing” tab. Now, it is time to take all of this information and turn it into a well-written essay. Read the directions for the “writing prompt.” Write a 3 (indented) paragraph essay making a well-supported claim as to which of the author’s claims (in the articles) is more convincing and why. Clearly convey your “point of view” (how you feel) and “purpose” (your reasons) using evidence from the text of both articles (quotes). Please be sure not to use 1st or 2nd person pronouns in your argument (i.e. Don’t use I, me, my, our, we, you, your or yours). When finished, submit the assignment.
Finally, peer edit at least 5 other essays from your class. Be sure to give a score and comments for each. And remember, give useful and constructive comments. Never be mean or hurtful (providing mean or silly comments could negatively affect your Citizenship grade).
Log in to your school portal, and click on “McGraw Hill,” and then “Launch” your Study Sync textbook. Click on the assignment titled “Blast: Teenage Heroes.” Read the article and type your blast. Submit the blast, and then score and comment on at least 15 of your classmates’ blasts.
Spend the day reading your fictional Newbery Award/Honor Book of 100 pages or more. Remember that the book report will be assigned on April 16th.
Stay safe and healthy!
