Five (5) Contour Line Hands
  • Draw a series of 5 hands from observation in different positions using clean, consistent contour line.
  • Hands may be sketched lightly in pencil first. Draw lightly and allow your marks to be loose at this stage. Move your arm and shoulder when sketching instead of your wrist and fingers, as you have a higher range of motion and control this way. Make sure you are constantly referencing back to your model and drawing from observation!
  • Finish your drawing by tracing over your pencil sketch in black ink using clean, consistent contour line. Erase all pencil lines upon completion!
  • Fit all 5 Hands on one page. Vary the scale and position of each drawing to fit all five hands on one sketchbook page or spread.

Thursday 3/19/20 Sketchbook assignment #3
Please complete a still life drawing of an apple, using the key points of value.

When rendering a three dimensional form using the concepts of chiaroscuro, the artist should utilize a strong directional light source. The values within the drawing will be determined by the angle of the light and how it falls across the form. The following areas of value should be seen in the form:

  • Highlight - The area that is directly pointing towards the light source. This should be the brightest value in the image.
  • Transitional Midtones - as the object turns away from the light there will be a smooth, gradual transition from light to dark. Be very conscious of the surface of the form and how the values would curve around the object.
  • Core Shadow - The core shadow is the darkest value on the surface of the object, located opposite of the highlight.
  • Reflected Light - Light bounces off of surfaces and objects and reflects onto others. This can typically be seen on the bottom of objects, just before you reach the edge, and is represented by a slightly lighter mid-tone value than the core shadow.
  • Cast Shadow - cast shadows are shadows that are cast onto the surface an object is sitting on or objects next to it based upon how the object is blocking the light from the light source. The size and shape of cast shadows is determined by the proximity and direction of the light source.

Altered Sketchbook assignment: If you do not have your book with you do this on another piece of paper and add it in later. Also use whatever materials you have available at your house. Do not go out and buy anything.

Visual Journaling Prompt: Thought this was a good one to reflect on right now
  1. "Change" - Everything changes. It’s a natural law that objects, people, and situations are impermanent and are always in a state of flux and change. At times, change is lightning quick and takes place in a flash. Other times, change is as slow as continental drift and seems to not be happening at all. How do you react to change in your life? How have you changed over the course of your life? Do you anticipate change and actively participate in the changing world and your changing self? Or do you deny change and passively ride along as things change around you? How open or closed are you to change?
