Dance

Course Description

In this year-long class, you will dance, stretch, jump, turn, reach, laugh, love, and grow.  Whether you are an advanced student of dance, a beginner, or somewhere in between, this is the class for you!

Through exposure to various dance genres (including jazz, cultural dance, ballet, musical theatre, hip hop and choreography), you will get fit while having fun.  Just as much an intellectual and emotional experience as it is a physical one, dance requires that you focus and give it everything you've got.  It's a healthy way to relieve stress and a much needed break from the over-abundance of screens and technology that fill our day.

Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance. Great dancers are great because of their passion.      *Martha Graham*

Yellow Ribbon Week, PSA

Students address bullying in this PSA produced by Video Com students Timothy and Luke.
Happy New Year!!  Students, to kick off our cultural dance unit, we are going to meet tomorrow (Tuesday, January 3rd) in room 405 for a cultural dance research activity!  See you there, and spread the word!

Ballet Rocks!

I love this clip put out by Anaheim Ballet showing how exciting and athletic ballet is.  The dancers in the video, with their daring jumps and spectacular turns, worked for many years to be able to do these amazing feats.  It all begins at the barre-- with a single plie, a tendu, some releves, dégagés, and passes.  It's hard work, but dancers love the challenge and the never-ending pursuit of perfection.

Misty Copeland -- A Hometown Hero!

Misty Copeland, principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre, is a San Pedro native.  Hers is another story of triumph worth knowing, and her autobiography, Life in Motion, is an enjoyable read, also available at the MIS library.

Taking Flight

Students, here is one of the young dancers featured in the documentary "First Position," which we started watching before Thanksgiving.  If you're interested in Michaela's compelling story from orphan to ballerina, our very own MIS library has her autobiography.

Thriller Tutorial

Dancers, this tutorial is nearly spot on to what we're doing with "Thriller".  There are some slight differences, so in an effort to remain consistent, please practice the way we're learning it in class.  This tutorial is helpful for review, especially for purposes of timing and review of the choreography in general.  Happy dancing!  ;)
