Tuesday, 2/18/20 

Classwork: Discuss Freedom Walkers; read Introduction and Ch. 1; Fill out FW#2 People Log 1. Jo Ann Robinson and 2. Tacky Gayle.

 

HW:  R/R 10 mins; bring classroom library books tomorrow.

 

Wednesday, 2/19/20

Classwork: Go over/discuss Vocabulary Words for Freedom Walkers.  Complete FW#3 Vocabulary Definitions and Sentences 1-10 (see handout for directions).

 

HW: R/R 10 mins; finish FW#3 Vocabulary Definitions and Sentences Terms "1-10" (see handout for directions).

 

Thursday, 2/20/20

Classwork:

Complete FW#3 Vocabulary Definitions and Sentences 11-20 (see handout for directions). Read Ch. 2 in Freedom Walkers; add sentences FW#2 People Log by filling in 3. Edwina and Marshall Johnson, 4. Claudette Colvin, 5. E.D. Nixon, 6. Clifford Durr, 7. Fred Gray, 8. Mary Louis Smith, 9. WPC, and 10. NAACP (see handout for directions.

Classwork: Play "Dawa's Dilemmas" vocabulary review game; Continue filling in FW#2 People Log and FW#4 Chapter 2 Summary (2 paragraphs/1 pg college ruled paper).

Monday, 2/10/20 

Classwork: Finish "Monster" Essay, swap essays to prepare to draw friend's monster.

HW:  R/R 10 mins; Biography Project due stapled tomorrow:  1. Title Page, 2. Biography (3 paragraphs), 3. Works Cited, 4. Outline.

 

Tuesday, 2/11/20 

Classwork: Turn in Biography Project:  1. Title Page, 2. Biography (3 paragraphs), 3. Works Cited, 4. Outline; Complete Illustration of  Friend’s Monster:

Read your friend’s Monster Informative Essay.

Draw your friend’s monster/alien the size of half of an 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper.  The monster should take up most of the piece of paper.  Draw the background of the picture based on your friend’s description.  If they did not describe it, design your own background. 

Color and shade it completely.  There should be no pencil on the final draft.

On the back of the paper write: “My friend: (and your friend’s name).”  Then, write “My friend’s monster name: (and the name)”, and then write: “Drawn by (and your name).”

FW#1 Quickwrite: Prereading

(at least one page/college ruled paper/2 paragraphs

Think about a time you observed someone being treated unfairly.  Describe the situation in detail.  How might the person have felt?  Did anyone challenge the injustice or help the person?  If so, how?  Looking back, was there something more that you could have done?  Explain.

Friday, 2/14/20 

Classwork: Valentine's Day Acrostic Poem: Cut a heart shape out of an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of colorful paper.  In the middle of the heart write the name of someone you care about.  Then write an adjective for each letter of the name (cascading down from each letter).  Decorate the heart, show it to the teacher, and then give it to the person to brighten his or her day.

Classwork: Continue Monster Project:

Part 1: Your Monster Illustration:

Draw a monster/alien the size of half of an 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper. The monster should take up most of the piece of paper.  Add background pictures into the remaining blank areas.

Color and shade the monster and background completely and write its name at the top of the paper.  There should be no pencil on the final draft, and be sure to include your name ('s) monster, the date and your period on the back.

HW:  R/R 10 mins; Continue Working on Biography Project (Outline, Title page, Works Cited, Final Draft) due Tuesday 2/11.

Begin with a grabbing lead that tells the main idea (thesis) of your paper.

Describe how to draw your monster (at least 5 sentences).

Introduce the next topic (transition).

Paragraph 2:

Describe how to draw your background (at least 5 sentences).

Introduce the next topic (transition).

Paragraph 3:

Provide a topic sentence.

Describe how to color your monster and background (at least 5 sentences).

Wednesday Classwork:

Continue Biography Prewriting Activities: Continue filing in notes on notecards and begin outline. (see handout for directions).

HW: R/R 10 mins; finish taking notes on notecards; continue outline.

Tuesday:  Classwork: Finish iReady Assessment; Online Textbook: "Egyptian Engineers" and "In a New Light" Blasts and Peer Edits

HW: R/R 10 mins; finish/submit  "Egyptian Engineers" and "In a New Light" Blasts and Peer Edits

 

Wednesday: Classwork: Begin "Figurative Language Activity" (see handouts).  Write down definitions, and work with partners to create examples.

HW: R/R 10 mins; submit Blasts if you haven't yet.

 

Thursday: Classwork:

Continue "Figurative Language Activity" (see handouts).  Continue working with your partners creating examples, and then read the poem, "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" by Dr. Seuss.

HW: R/R 10 mins; finish examples of figurative language if you didn't finish in class.

 

Friday: Classwork: "Figurative Language Activity" (see handouts).  Continue working with your partners. Listen to the song "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" by Dr. Seuss, annotate the text of the poem by highlighting all of the uses of Alliteration, Hyperbole, Simile and Metaphor (each a different color).  Show the colors on the key at the bottom of the poem.

Monday - Thursday  read and record 10 minutes on your HRC January (due Friday, 1/31). 

Monday: Classwork: Online Textbook: Continue "Hatshepsut His Majesty Herself' Close Read. Complete collaborative discussion and answering Focus Q's (in text boxes); work on Venn Diagram and then begin Hatshepsut Essay: 3 paragraph essay answering the writing prompt (use the ACE Method for each of the 3 questions). ACE: Answer/Cite Evidence/Explain

Hatshepsut Essay Format:

Monday: Classwork: Complete "Blast: Ancient Ruins" Activity on Online Textbook (in portal).

HW: R/R 10 mins

 

Tuesday:  Classwork: Pass back papers.  Online Textbook (in Portal): Read "Hatshepsut: His Majesty, Herself." Use context clues to define (in text boxes) the 5 boldfaced vocabulary words.  Check answers in dictionary.

HW: R/R 10 mins

 

Wednesday: Classwork: Online Textbook (in Portal): Watch Hatshepsut Study Sync Video (Collaborative Conversation).  Answer Think Q's 1-3 using the ACE method (Answer question; Cite evidence; Explain how the evidence proves your answer) 

HW: Finish and Submit Hatshepsut: His Majesty, Herself Think Q's 1-3.

 

Thursday: Classwork: Online Textbook: Peer Edit Hatshepsut Think Q's 1-3; begin lesson "Informational Text Elements" (take notes).

HW: R/R 10 mins (finish reading the biography (100 pgs or more) that you chose by 1/28)

 

Friday: Classwork: Online Textbook: Go over answers to Hatshepsut Think Q's 1-3. Begin Hatshepsut Close Read. Complete Vocabulary and begin collaborative discussion and answering Focus Q's (in text boxes).
