hi everybody want to walk him you to our current orientation night for incoming 6th graders I first want you to hear from Miss melonowski she'll do a brief explanation the question-and-answer session and the Hand raised and all of that good stuff Karen all yours next school year so during this person we're going to have a slideshow and you'll hear from a few of us explaining some of the programs and send them some of them messing both of sixth grade but if you do have a question we do have the Q&A feature will not have they raised the hand feature so if you have questions you're more than welcome along the way while you're thinking of them to write those in there we may be answering them along the way and will give you your answers that way or if we need to come back around and answers from that you I am not Q&A we are more than happy to dress that at the end and we are going to Frank califano I want to welcome you on the principal last proud principal this is my fourth year and probably unlike any year that I have ever seen in my life or career this is very very strange to me to be. can't you like that so I'm going to be very honest cuz normally we would have you in our tab I'd be able to see your faces be able to answer questions with your hands raised hopefully this is the one and only time we ever have to do this way and hopefully next year we have people back in the tab before we go any further we have some extremely important guests that I want to welcome they are leaders of our parent groups they are one of our famous ex principals here in Palos Verdes who now runs our summer school program and he's the one that I'd really like to hear from you first Mister Car when I go back way back as matter of fact first phone calls that ever made and he probably doesn't even remember this when I started thinking about being an administrator I actually called him and asked him for some advice and you know he's one of the few reasons and I know he doesn't over this call but why I decided to become an administrator and you know I I I want to thank him for that I've never had that opportunity but now that he's here with us tonight it was my chance so thank you Pat you were an influence on my career my friend so before without further Ado would like to introduce me to pack or when he'll tell you a little bit about the summer programs that we're going to be running this year that all yours well thank you very much for a kid and it's a pleasure should be here this evening my devoted 41 years of my professional career to work in the Palos Verdes Unified School District 29 of which were as a principal at the intermediate level back spent 10 years is principal at Mary best intermediate and sat in the seat that Frank is sitting in right now in Frank I do remember that call and I'm so glad that you decided to go into the field of administration because you've done a great job and parents remembering back how many years to 29 years as a principal I think this was my most favorite night of all talking to the parents of incoming 6th grade students because it's a scary time it's a time when you really isn't specially if it's your first and you really don't know what to expect and you've heard a lot of stories and you don't know what's true and what's not but I will tell you the most important thing of all what I always stress with parents coming into that that evening is the most important thing is you are in great hands you got an absolutely incredible principal and support staff you've got counselors you got teachers that are really child-centered and cheer so if you carry nothing away from this evening hopefully you carry this one piece of Mind knowing that your son or daughter is going to be in great hands beginning neck sure when they enter on the campus it miraleste in what act it is tonight I'm wearing a hat as the Director of summer school programs under the auspices of the peninsula Education Foundation and are purchased each year is to provide an opportunity particularly for incoming 6th graders to get a sense and feel of what it's like to be on a middle school campus before school actually begins in the fall sadly with Colvin album the things have been connected with it we're not able to run what we normally do which is a program at Merrill S TV is and Ridgecrest because of obviously protocols need to be followed excetera however we are going running on campus experience at Ridgecrest Intermediate School and we selected Ridgecrest because it's centrally located for the entire Community the program's going to run from June 21st to July 16th it starts at 8:30 or 8:15 in the morning and goes until 12:30 if you choose the on-campus program and we also have an online program as well both of which you can find if you Roar website and it's an easy one to remember it's pvpss p Palos Verdes Peninsula summer school's pvpss and if you go on that website the brand new one it will answer all of your questions with regard to summer school it is a fee-based program all the fees that are collected through tuition are to pay for the teachers and when we've got professional Tristram all three middle schools teaching in the program the cost that we absorb I will pay for their salaries will pay for the rental of materials in a classroom and what I'd like for you to do is just be aware that this is an opportunity for your son or daughter to become a little better acquainted with what the procedures are and Protocols are the classes that are listed following open protocols and if God forbidding if there is a situation where we do I have a scare and we do have to transition we are ready to seamlessly transition to an online program but we're really not worried about that happening I just want to let you know that we're prepared for anything and everything we will follow all the rules and all protocols the kids will have a great opportunity between now and the end of the year to get a sense at least the currents set the middle school what it's like but your Son's and Daughter's going to have the chance to start it off right at the beginning as it should be and I'm excited for you so I'm not going to take any more time other than you once again Messenger to you the PVP css.com summer school website that you can go to I hope to see you child on campus at Ridgecrest or perhaps in the online program and you're welcome to contact the help desk pvpss with any questions that you have and we'll ask them all for you in again I wish you all the very best it's an exciting time ahead and again you are under great leadership and Guidance with your principles to tell sir and your teachers that you're going to be as connected to cell thank you and have a wonderful evening thank you Pat thank you for the kind words pal I bowled I have older daughters now and one of the ways that I got my daughter's acclimated to making the transition to Intermediate School was that they both took summer school and it helped them so much and and ask Pat said unfortunately with the way situation is when I can be able to have it here at Merrill last which is you know too bad but the fact of being on Intermediate School campus and getting a feel for the lockers and getting a feel for everything that it entails was invaluable to my daughters and I hide recommended for your kids also so thank you again Pat so what if a big difference is you're going to find from elementary school dinner Media School if this is your first child is parents aren't really allowed on campus during the school day and asking imagine the past year parents on campus I get that but I'm going to assume that life is going to come back to normal, I guess we're going to have kids full time and we're going to have all our programs in place excetera but one of the things parents can do is get involved with our parent groups and I have a couple of incredible representatives for our parent groups here tonight don't want to speak with you are Peach what's a president tonight Kelly Cook cannot make it but she has an awesome replacement and Miss Linda Laura and just a quick backstory I actually went to elementary school with her husband we used to play basketball back in the first-set third grade so when I saw the name or Abby come up last year on my registration with kids I said it had to be so the first chance I got I saw and she has twin boys who are awesome and I said because your dad happened to be Michael but they told me yes and that's just started a whole flood of end Memories Back for me also so I want introduce Miss Belinda Orab thank you for being here tonight Linda thank you for the kind words Frank Mike sitting over there giving me thumbs up okay so thank you I'm the Executive Vice President of the PTA and I'm going to be the incoming president for the 20 21 22 year so I just thought I'd let you know as the California said there are no volunteers on campus for a intermediate school but there's a loophole if you join the PTSA there are plenty of programs that we sponsor there's academic enrichment program already at your fingertips Capital Convoy emergency disaster preparedness International Day Japanese student exchange programs there's monthly guest speakers parent Resource Center Red Ribbon Week reflection Sacramento Safari safe school program School assemblies field trips I don't know if we'll have any but we sponsor them there's also teacher appreciation technology technology integration programs Yellow Ribbon Week we have a web Mentor program on sure that you'll hear a lot of that and youth count that's just the start off so it would be greatly appreciated if you could join the ETA loss of a newsletter that we send out to all the people who join and you could you could go on campus for some of these other little things that they have like the international day and all these other things so if you're interested and you really want to join the PTSA there's other ways you can get on campus by joining the PTSA or booster club if you have any questions you can get ahold of me Eeyore mr. Califon and I'm sure he could direct them to me you're muted mister califano thank you Linda I can't emphasize enough how how phenomenal RPG essays and booster clubs and what they do for our kids in our school just just incredible people I suggest and a highly commend you join speaking of the booster club so you can imagine this is my 22nd years administrator and most every year we have new people who come in who run pgsa is and boosters and then I've had such luck Indian I've had such incredible people running these programs that I was able to work side-by-side with and one of my favorites is coming to talk to you right now her name is Kayla Montgomery and unfortunately she's going to be leaving us and moving on to the high school which I'm sure she isn't going to make great great impact their Michaela I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate you and everything you done so introduce yourself and let the people see what I see come on hi my name is Kayla Montgomery find a greater middle has to be going to have a 9th grader or something Lehigh I have a pleasure it was amazing pleasure working with the teachers that stuff all the pdsa presidents every year we have different ones and amazing things you guys are so lucky how's your kids coming to me we have a membership that is $75 a year booster club Works along with the school on PTSA we are on solid activities on like art deadliest off of dude is not with Ron on do all these parts to some of the sports have tryouts like soccer volleyball basketball football club directors at 3 but our activities director is a teacher of magic team it seemed we were on the eighth eighth grade Disneyland problem to cotillion it'll be the membership the $75 membership always going to give you this counts so everybody will pay for it but will be example of a Chilean is $130 per year if you are a member you pay if you're not a member I think that's very much and we luckily we are going to have an amazing Macy president for next year and name is Stacy gerar here on this meeting but you going to be with me going to miss everybody here thank you Kayla the one thing I want to add to that is even through the pendant pandemic and through the closures we continue to run clubs we haven't been able to do Sports programs as you can but that's coming now we're actually going to have soccer tryouts for both boys and girls coming up I believe next week and we're actually going to have some competition between the other schools so so things are are moving to the better in all of this situation so I beg you join the booster club it's a great organization we do so many things and we'll get into a little bit later about all of the things that we have available here on campus the other thing that's a bit different guises normally this is our first meeting we normally talk to you as parents first and then we move on to go to the schools and talk to the kids this year we reverse than a little bit because we had to is you know we spoke to your kids first and then we talk to you tonight so I'm thinking some of you probably heard some of our presentations to the kids so some of this might be a little bit redundant but at least you have some chance at get some questions answered if you have any I'd like to introduce my team in my previous life I was a high school basketball coach baseball coach and I always understood how important team was and in my opinion the head coach is only as good as the team around him so unfortunately Mike Lee Holt has been taken from us and moved to the distance learning academy but up until this year he was the assistant principal with me for the last three years and he's phenomenal and I'm I'm hearing through the grapevine maybe he will be back next year as assistant principal which I hope but caramel anasci and Lisa Larson are two counselors have no me hold down the fort this year and trust me it is been we've had our tasks ahead of us in front of us we have worked I think probably harder than we've ever worked in our life and getting this all together keeping it together this year so Karen and Lisa thank you publicly for all that you've done I can't wait for the parents to hear you speak because they're going to see what I see also is how awesome you are we also have a school psychologist choose not here tonight her name is Emily Wham she has a small child so we give her a pass on that one and then you know so without further Ado we would like to get into this so Karen why don't we play we went through their middle school 101 miss melonowski this is all yours when I was starting to look but then I thought in front of the power the reason why mrs. Larson I have comprehensive counselor next to her name is because we now have the roles of splitting the alphabet of the students here at the high school counselors run so I typically in taking care of students whose last name are a through o last name and she doesn't pee through Z but the comprehensive means that we are helping the children your children with their academic means social emotional their personal relationships their friendships with peers. Mediation conflict so we're trying to work with the whole child as best as we can and even though Lisa and I our own in alphabet we still work together all the time we see kids out at lunch duty kids come in and she's busy and it's her Alpha but it's obviously I'm going to still address whatever is going on so we just try to do it up a little bit so we're a little it's a little bit manageable but we do everyday all day long running down the hallway and talking about kids all the time I hope the answer. Question And in regards to Emily Lambert School Tech College she is primarily the lead for our special education population in regards to eye peas and specific counseling with students and you will hear from her if your student needs her services for any reason and there's going to be a mess accelerated which I will talk a little bit about in a minute or if they will have science still have social studies which is ancient civilizations is what they study they will have PE every day they will have language arts every day then the choice you guys will have to make as a family is there's going to be an elective wheel or year-long music elective wheel could be three different wheels so one will have they will all have rights study skills one will also have art like an intro to Art and an entered in stem is kind of giving kids a little snapshot of classes that they can maybe explore later on his 7th and 8th grade Ceramics and drawing and painting with stem there's more than stem classes with robotics that might help them get ready to apply to be on the robotics team so it's just kind of an introduction to Summer courses that will get a little bit more in detail later on in later years so that'll be right study stem are right study art interest Spanish right study introduced them into this matter so answer to Spanish a little introduction I keep saying that but just to get kids excited about taking foreign language cuz they will have to take it if not in middle school which is not a requirement they will need to take it in high school to fulfill requirements for colleges which I'm not going to get into you through right now it's primarily band instruments never any questions you have about music you can send mrs. Larson and I an email what I will say about this presentation little different with the kids so I'm kind of fine-tuning this make sure I have for incoming 6th graders which will also have directions on how you would complete the scheduling for so you're obviously you're just going to pick one of the wheels or music that'll be your choice cuz I burned it to eat station for that the reason why it hasn't been advertised yet is we are waiting for the math recommendations from the feeder schools to be and put an Aries so that when you are able to go to Aries to view your math placement you know what to expect and it's not something that you were hoping for then there's a different process to address that which you'll get directions on on a later date and not too late probably within the next week or two grades in Middle School we now have grades A B C D and F no letter grades anymore we have progress report time in the middle of each trimester that do not go on a transcript just the report card Witcher 3 times a year like you do in elementary school we're not credit-based it's just letter grades that is more in high school. I move our faces over here Walker's you are going to have to lockers there's one for your academic you're to put all your books your binders your pencil pouch and then there's one in PE down in the locker room so kids will be changing out for PE usually buy a couple uniforms and made you know bring them home every week at the end of the week please especially during swim unit when they leave the towel and way too long so if we still have papii swam Mabel have that two weeks every trimester I believe I'm correct you can buy locks in our student store we're open every day if you haven't received if you have a boss I'm already under $10 each if we still have them available you can buy a pack to pass that had the same combination for both so their child only have to learn the one combination for both or both lockers in regards to academic support obviously that's what we are here for but there's plenty of other support we do have one place we do have a homework club that typically runs Tuesday Wednesday Thursday after school I was just free minutes right after school if for some reason you had to pick up your child before the 4 and time that's always fine but that is a great resource especially when we typically have it obviously ran by her teachers who find tune and whatever was taught that day if it was something the kids didn't understand so stay tuned for that we usually don't have end of September October I don't know we'll have to figure that out once the school year Rollin we have a student center who which has computers and printers you know we've all had a day where printer doesn't work so we have to run out of the house or teachers are usually pretty forgiving if you obviously say that your printer wasn't working we do have a student center open all day even at lunch time where students can go in and print something out that they may have forgotten or because there's a malfunction at home there's also a teacher in there that helped out kids if they question about maybe something they didn't understand sometimes kids when they don't have to go there to take a test the next day but these are all supports and services that work hand-in-hand and we helped arrange all of that you don't have to call ahead and making a is Mexico the center to do something open door for all kids and then if there's a concern about getting something else done again that's what mrs. arson are here about and the course that's true but we also work with her psychologist we repaired ministration if your califano Lehigh I mean we are just non-stop spinning awesome team that really are here to help each other out and help you guys out as well so I am going to leave that to the next mrs. Larson go ahead and explain all of the student support that we also have for each other basically we really we do our best to identify what your students need were very in tune to knowing how difficult and anxiety-producing the transition to be so we start off with having our ambassadors do virtually into the feeder Elementary School 80% day in the life of a student you know how they got involved some of the challenges that they had ways that they have a hearing from other students and taking questions from your students is really important to us very rare that we have many students that comes with or smaller feeder elementary schools as well as coming to us from the school year with an ice cream mixer for those students you are new to the district as well as those coming from smaller funeral of entries and typically have about a hundred students that are invited to this ice cream mixer and they get the sense that I'm not alone they go to some activities to get to know one another skipping down for the bottom of the slide we also have a fabulous Mentor program it's called where which stands for where everybody belongs and right now our current seventh-graders are applying to be web Theatres next year's 8th grade math answers to the 6th grade class so we look for students who are kind and can find answers for them and they're willing to step up and really be there for students should they feel they have a question in there more comfortable speaking to up here I'm just lots of fun activities to do when it starts off at 8 August 18th with Webb rookie Camp I'm hoping every one of your students can attend has a half-day event where they'll meet him and they go through tons of games that actually teach them how to adjust and be successful at Merrill last it's all over the campus tours then after the campus tours they go on to the pool party which is sponsored by the ambassadors and they have fun and they play if it's a fabulous day so I do hope that you can put that on the calendar because that is where they were meet their web leaders their sign to be that will be with them throughout the school year and it was and we have the events they all showed you a web movie night super fun before the holidays that come in there Sammy sacred beach chairs and we watch some holiday movie and just get silly so I do hope your students are able to attend. the price we have our little bit more guidance counseling face stomach malinowski and I are going to be doing surveys and assessments to really figure out where your students needs are at this time and the lessons that we deliver in the classrooms all are based on where your current Duty are there times we might see a gap or a need for problem solving time management organization managing emotions identifying remote and it really just depends on after we do our see hey you know what we got some kids that are really struggling with anxiety so that's kind of hoping she feels things like that so they vary each year but we will always have lesson plans on harassment sexual harassment technology safety the more information we have about the the laws of life in the rules that the better they can make well-informed decisions on conflict mediation we want to give them the skills to be able to help one another we are very big on being an upstander you see something we'd like you to say something and that goes with it Anonymous reporting that we get from many many students were very appreciative of the trust that they have in us so if they do come to us with some kind of concern confidentiality super course if there's a safety issue. That changes the rules of confidentiality but I'm very impressed with how many kids will advocate for one another and say I'm a little worried about my friend or I'm seeing this online so a lot of her licensure based on the student concerns crisis-management we created a showroom for students with extreme anxiety they come to us they need a little time out we talked him through Witnesses beautiful calming place that they need fishing boats we went to counseling groups based on needs so there's a lot of support for their social emotional as well as their Academic School the next like might show a few more time we have lots of parent education support in this is identified the need for identified by the district is weld with counselor in put so this year we had guest speakers on the topics of speaking to your child about race and racism as well as how did how the Adolescent brain develop so the slide here these books for a few years ago guest speakers change every year just based on what students and parents are needing to your we do have a guidance counseling page that the up so often times this year we're posting our lessons so you can see what this student have been you know seeing from us but there's also some great resources for anything from lgbtq questions you might have Knology safety we created a virtual calming room so that students that really might not reach out and go to visit websites that can see anything from coloring yourself, do you know of any kind of deep breathing exercises it's it's fabulous. I hope that you go on to every now and check it or guidance counseling Pages sometime the next flight to should have a little bit more so we realized that this transition is completely scary but I also think that the kids are really excited because they have a sense of feeling grown up when they're going into 6th grade and I want to remind everybody I don't think I need to tell anybody notice that they're still there still little there and their brains won't be fully developed other 24 which is kind of serious but that's the time that you give them the opportunity to make mistakes and they will make them and as long as we know that they've made them and we help them figure out how to unmake them or damage control or learn from them then that's our goal we've done our job so we want you to be involved but we also want you to give them an opportunity to try new things and Timmy Failure is actually a really positive growing fur so if you find that there's anything they've maybe you're not gotten behind in some class work maybe hit it from you if that's that is very normal is something that we we help you we have to student get through it as well I'm so if you find that urine and butting heads or sometimes kids will come to us and say I don't know what to do here you know we help them figure out how they want to solve the problem and we support them as fast as possible baby think of yourself as a personal secretary you know just checking on them having them check their kind of planner every night right now so I can Google classroom and make sure they actually completed the assignment that's helpful we always encourage you to check fairies and see if there's two missing assignments a couple times a week or once a week would be great because if there's some missing assignments that gives them up before they when they make mistakes sometimes take us to discipline but our school approaches religion has enlarged so we do have restorative justice lessons that we have and counseling that we offer prior to any kind of discipline which I know Mr telephone number cell phone tour challenge I used to think that they were not our friend but now with virtual learning and the disconnectedness is some of our skin just all they've been a Lifeline for them so I changed my view a little bit but it's cool we do not encourage their use we're finding that the more students can speak to one another rather than staring at a device is what our main goal is so they're allowed before school but once that first bell ring that turned off their put away and then when the bell rings they can turn it back on I'm so no class teacher should be asking you to use a device if you get that story from your student at some point after a few exceptions but definitely and we're always going to ask the best of your student not we're going to ask them to do what they're capable of and we have confidence that they'll meet the expectations but like I said before should they not asking myself to California we are all there to get them through it mister California that could be you hi everybody as you can tell awesome teammates mention discipline this is a tough one for me because the longer I stay in this position the more I hate disciplining kids I'll be very honest with you when I was this age anybody who tried to discipline me I couldn't stand and I I basically didn't listen so I kind of went the other direction that's how hard headed I was and you know my parents finally had enough with me and sent me to Catholic School it still didn't work so is that that's that's the tough one for me because I think at times there has to be punishments first things that kids do but in my opinion we need to formulate punishments that fit the crime number one number two that help a kid learn and grow from that mistake cuz I only became the man I became by learning from my mistakes and I think that's for everybody out there so you know the discipline peace yes we were discipline kids if necessary but we try to counsel more than just anything else and I and I think Miss melonowski Miss Larson hit it right I mean 5th grade coming to 6th grade kids they're still babies I mean you talking about 10 11 12 year old kid that really still are valuable that you can talk to that you can work with and I think we have a really good team that understands that okay the attendance piece you know what time does it is another tricky issue right now because it was the online learning we've had a number of kids who have really taken advantage of the attendance situation and it's hard to track them hopefully with school coming back in session now we can get kids back on track in and I think one of the biggest pieces that we as a team we're going to have to do when this all comes down is is kids are going to have to adjust socially again and we're finding that I mean it when our first 6th grade came in last week these kids were they basically didn't want to speak they just kind of walk now they're getting a little bit of hanging of a being back in school and I think they're really enjoying our 7th and 8th grade kids are first that came again today or Monday and yesterday same thing kind of quiet we heard some great greetings and 8th grade Park above us as kids were being dropped off but for the most part things have been very quiet with that so I personally think that social piece is going to be something that we're going to have to work on real heart cuz he's kids have been really by themselves sequester for a year the antennas pieces giant we have to have kids to school now course we are please do not send your child to school if they're not feeling good especially now but if you take a look at what we have here really poor attendance begins in the eighth grade and continues on through High School and we don't want that type situation occurring okay so our job by the time kids leave here is we want to prepare them for the rigors of high school so that they can go on and start a career goal college and it really does start and end research does say it starts by the 8th grade so we track attendance pretty heavily and now it's kids coming back will be able to do so a lot more regularly so I just wanted to show you that you can see 8th grade attendance is huge my thought is start with the 6th grade send kids to school most everyday unless of course they're not feeling real well our expectations what was one who put this together and I and I just love it I I just think it's a great symbol for our school so we want to be mindful of everybody we want to be open we want to accept everybody no matter what you accept them you want to demonstrate Integrity always want to be honest I tell kids all the time when I bring them into my office I said it if you don't want to really earn my wrath just be honest with what you did promise you if you're honest you're not going to get into a situation where I have to really get Stern with you cuz that's not my style but the problem is if you lie that trust is gone and I want to be able to trust each and every kid here at miraleste the other strive for Success it look you guys were going to work your kids hard your sons and daughters are going to work they are going to get prepared for high school that's the thing about it is we also want I'm a whole lot of fun in between that hard work and that's what we want to show so we have some websites we want to share with you okay the pvpusd website I think most of you know how to get to that there's some really good information on that the guide to reopening school I think is a real well well written document if you haven't read it should probably take a look at it I know most your kids are back at school at least part of the time so you kind of directions to district is taking with that but there is also information about school board meetings and Etc our website is Mis. Pvpusd.net I highly encourage you to take a look at our site updated regularly their R's sports information there is counseling information there's information about clubs on their there's information about our drama program that is a huge huge website for you to remember some portals that you're going to be looking at that the kids are going to be using I know some of them are using a whole lot more now such as eight packs and sadra but I'm not sure those programs are going to be available next year but if you take a look at what we have there big ideas with math McGraw-Hill language arts those of the programs that will probably remain as we go forward okay so the one thing I begged your kids to do when I spoke with them last month was to get involved in their school has five different elementary schools where kids come from they go from a class of say 72 a class I think we're going to most of 300 new 6th graders this year so what an opportunity to make new friends and I begged them get involved if you take a look at what you see in front of you you know the dress up day is Marauder Madness ASP class competition all of those things occur monthly and I can't begin to tell you how great Halloween is here and it's truly my favorite day cuz 98% of the kids dressed up in the costumes unbelievable what time do the staff dresses up I mean it's just a fun day we have competitions for best costume group costumes I hope we can do it this year as one of the big days that I miss not being able to do this year Genesis run by Ras big eyes and they have great competitions the one thing I did exercise for kids with leadership the ASP program we have here Dan Hernandez runs an incredible program so I would hope that if the student is interested in school leadership they would take a look at the ASB class competitions also go with Marauder Madness and then we have on her intramural program which I could talk for about a half hour on and brag about the staff team but I think the kid got windows and got a gist of what we try to do with the intramural program at lunch after school are booster club runs incredible clubs Athletics as you can see we've already spoken about some of those things just about every Club you can imagine we could do and as I told the kids if there isn't a club that they see that they're interested in they can form their own all we ask is they find a teacher they make a presentation to the booster club they have an idea of how they want the club to run and Miss Montgomery and the booster club board usually say absolutely yes believe it or not had a lot of questions from kids about forming Club oh my goodness we would love to have a golf club when I was principal TV is we had a golf club and we got to be able to go to Terranea and they were golfing at Terranea once a month mr. Taylor who is now our PE teacher here was the one who ran that club and I went and got with them a little few times even though I absolutely stink at golf so those are the kind of things that we can get your kids tonight and I told them if if you lie did you something we can find a place for you here at Merrill last we will find something for you to do get involved please emphasize either of you want to take enrollment come on Karen I know this is your key so if you gone to the enrollment center you are free and if you have not done any of that and you're not already currently a PV student you need to go to the enrollment center which is in Malaga Cove their office is over there but we have down here so that's the first thing you do in once you're enrolled in the school district then that gets sent to mrs. cross who then there's mrs. Larson die to reach out to you to send you to a scheduling for him and any information that you would need prior to starting up Miralax but if you have any specific questions about what you have to provide I I think I know but I don't even want to attempt to give you what paperwork you have to show that's why I have mrs. cross information down I mean you're more than welcome to stop by as well she's here every day if you feel like you need to speak face-to-face or you may email her her email is Prosser last name here cross f as in Frank at pvpusd.net or you call the school which is 310-732-0900 and her extension would be 34202 I still going okay okay so the first line of defense if you're feeling a little x-rated and or have a question about something you heard from your child who came from home from school and upset that's something that happened with appear in class or something that happened in class or in a sign and that just didn't seem right we first recommend you go to the teacher because if if you were to start with one of us we still have to go to the teacher to find out the information so I think we always recommend to go there first if you're still feeling like resolved something still a little unsettling you're more than welcome to reach out to any of us but we obviously it would love for you to go there first because things obviously it's like the game telephone sometimes and there's some missing information from school to home up please because it if you were to call one of us as Miss melonowski said the first question we're going to ask you have you spoken to the teacher because you need to hear first-hand from the teacher not secondhand from us so I asked you please contact the teachers first if you have any type of situation or any question and really the best way to do it is via email I personally like phone calls myself but emails probably will give you quick responses the next piece I wanted at the Mystic Alfano's weekly blast well right now it's been mr. Calif daily blast. body and trying to get everybody to hear formation about the reopening of school and so on and the one thing I hate to do is enter date you with emails and blasts coming from me but right now there's just it obviously there's no other way to go about it so yes you will be getting blasted information for me we've had situations in this one of the reasons why I wanted to talk to you about this we've had situations where parents from whatever reason because of technical issues going on with their account maybe an email address is wrong on your Aerie's account Etc we're not getting the information that they needed to get for me okay so believe it or not it's now April and I've sent hundreds of blasts and we've had Parents call and say you know what I'm hearing from other parents that most kalpana's been sending out a lot of information but I'm not getting anything and then we go into the computer system and find out that the email was listed wrong or there's a little switch believe it or not on our Ares account that if it's checked all you're going to be getting his emergency blast which these are not so here's one thing I asked you getting an August you're going to start hearing from me and what I will be talking to you about her schedule and I'll be talking to you about schedules for school Etc if by the second week of August you have not received any blasphemy my suggestion is to contact the school because something's wrong I'm okay so that's one of the main reasons I wanted to step in on this piece we do have a Twitter follower it's a my . Marauders as you can see underscore sorry that Twitter feed is on our website and there's really great pictures and stuff on there so I suggest you take a look at it best way to communicate with teachers email phone face-to-face meetings face to face things aren't happening right now as you can imagine so the best way like I said to get ahold of anybody is he email I check my email regularly I check my phone messages maybe once a day to be honest because I'm on the computer constantly gives me the ability to check my email quickly I can respond to you and normally I try to respond parents emails within the hour because I'm able to do it phone calls a little bit different so I asked you at this point email is best way to in touch with us and when in doubt contact start with the teacher first if there's a concern there always you can come to us if those concerns aren't satisfactory explain we are on the same team I asked you please we are here for your kids we are here for you we're going to do whatever we can do to help you no matter what no questions asked we will do whatever we can do to help you okay so I say welcome to the broader family I know Miss Larson wanted to say something so I cut her off I apologize and she went over to smell it asked you. a lot of parents are interested in trying to thrilled about having their student involved in the web program iweb neither has not been selected yet they are currently applying and you will be hearing from the web leaders and awe and who your leaders are and further information about Webb rookie camp in the information will also be posted on edlio under students under Webster right now we're still running our Mentor program and it's not really focused on the incoming students that that will be update by the end of May to show you the dates and all of that information that is the main orientation to be honest with you however the counselors you go into all 6th grade classes and do what we call a 6th grade transition lesson and that's when we asked them to share with us anonymously what they're rumors that they've heard they're concerned they have a better about being at Merrill last things like that we go back in the classroom the next day we answer the questions every duet another overview how to transition while Tamara less do they will get to but to be honest the web rookie Camp is way better than listening to I don't care if your students are in GLA they will be in by HUD Rancho Vista and the dapple grey Ambassador version of their transition assembly we have already visited near Catalina so they will depress those will make sure they invite and it's not asking if this is okay could you please go over where when how when their students choose their electives so when once I get the green light that their mask selection has been inputted and Aries which I believe I need to go back I think I just was reminded the last few days when that will be. To be around this time I don't think we open it up until we had this night and the only thing you'll see is there a recommendation if you're currently already empty one stop there I like I said I will make sure my PowerPoint is is ready to go along with the forms and it will be a Microsoft form but we will have it with the PowerPoint so it will be stop shop for you but whenever and it will alert somehow I missed your call, we'll figure out how to alert the students that will be enrolling next year and or we can give it to the feeder schools in case Spirits go directly to the principles there but what I said earlier is most of this if not all of it is going to be on or mirrorless page so when you go to miraleste and the drop-down as academics and then it's guidance and counseling and on the right side listen to everything that we have and one of the things will be 6 grade however not on yet 6th grade PowerPoint and 6th grade form and then that will show you how to how to look for in regards to finding what your math placement is I mean I heard you to ask your current 5th grade teacher but I should be able to get some directions for youth field of view on your parent portal how to locate that recommendation and if in doubt you can email Larson Acres we can pull it up in a heartbeat once it once his life for us so if you're still unable to locate it please reach out to us it is not a burden that that's what we're here for and just a reminder this this meeting is being recorded So if this is a lot of information and you'd like to hear it again. Solutely it should be uploaded in 2 days but if you'd prefer you can email the counselors and will get back key with the questions I was reading some of the questions so I didn't hear were you able to cover teacher recommendations that was another question the only teacher recommendation for this incoming class would be a math place we have regular language arts we have social studies for all 6th graders science Route 6 graders PE for all six graders and then they're left if they were just on their own okay and I think we're almost there if students are not in the pvpusd system yet how will they get to know with her horses are well when I mean when we've already had some students pre-enrolled that are play not a p v Elementary School student so we are making those lists and we will be able to clear it and find out who who you are but honestly in the meantime please even now that you don't have to wait till August if you have questions I believe our emails are on our page as well this is Larson or okay so that might be the best for I mean I could say mine right now malinowski m a l i n o f s as in Sam kyk for Karen at the PDP USD. Net and Lisa's is Larson Lisa Larson ain't no space at pvpusd.net I'm so feel free to the scheduling for if there's anything that you would like a little bit more individualize answers and please reach out to at any time for now until the start of school absolutely any any challenges your family is facing that's always helpful for us to know so we can best support your student Miss malinowski Vincent Shore says yo what's up Miss everybody shut up from a former student boy do I miss those lunchtime days with the invention on this call sister I forgot the little sister you are coming up and Wister California you might want to best answer this when it is well understood the school would likely be all in the fall are there plans for students who may become ill or need to quarantine we're always no plans available for that you guys and I hope and pray it doesn't happen I hope by then this is kind of gone away you know a lot of people get vaccinated I mean the whole bet I at this point of time we've had kids on campus since October and we've had various cohorts of kids since October and I'm knocking on wood as I say this I'm going to knock on my head to we have not had one child get sick okay and I hope I just didn't jinx myself by saying that we've only had to shut down our cohort one time because we had an adult who came down with it and that was believe it or not back in October so from this point forward from that point we have been up and running we've had a number of kids on campus in a with it with our cohorts we've taken every precaution that we could possibly take our rooms for sanitized every day our dusk Circle Chromebooks are cleaned we are absolutely mandating the kids keep their masks on all day even though I'm going to be the first to tell you that's an extremely hard thing to do to keep mask on entire day we are not allowing kids to eat on campus at this point that's going to change so fingers crossed in the fact that we have covered our bases we ask kids to say separated I do believe those mandates are still going to be in effect, August inside number to see how things go but we do have plans in place is called the contact racing if somebody does get ill we we have a plan that we follow dph protocols we had to learn it so yes story short my fingers are crossed I'm knocking on my wooden head I'm doing everything that I can possibly do to help her pray that doesn't happen but we are prepared if it does I'm question about Mash brakes and Vac Nations for the teachers yeah you know it's not mandated the teachers get back to me is basically not mandated that anybody gets vaccinated so medically they do not have to tell us whether or not they've been vaccinated or not so that's you know that's entirely up to the individual mask breaks that's a really good question kids are half day now so I think we were able to get through the 3 hours okay without doing it when we go back full day we're going to have to figure something out that I had been you know the mask breaks have to be outside to have to be individualized kids are going to have to be on their own to be able to do it I think we're going to have to put a pause play shake it just raises and ask the teacher to go outside takes a little walk and take some some deep breaths cuz I can't deny I'm the same way I mean I have this that I where you can do you understand me when I talk through it you can barely see my face all you'll see is my bald head and it's really hard to keep this on the entire day so I come into my office I shot my door I take it off so kids are going to be the same so it's something that we're going to have to look at you guys at I know new priorities that we're going to have to look at but that's a really good question thank you for that the student teacher ratio are the classes for CDC guidelines right now are ratios 19 to 1 Max okay that is going to change on April 26th cuz their classrooms are big enough to hold 34th 5 kids at 3 feet apart which is what the guidelines suggest now we also have plastic partitions on every chair we call him sneeze guards every kid has unfortunately they're tough because they're hard for kids to see the board through these plastic partitions I mean it's like it's like looking through water at sometimes you know the sun filters through it but we're making adjustments to that but we have all of that place our biggest classes are going to be 3435, April 26th all right just a few questions about PE and that's how that is being handled that's really good question right now we cannot use locker rooms we cannot be in G I know a lot of the older high school kids if you have a high schooler they're being allowed into enclose facilities to participate in sports excetera the key difference is there being tested weekly okay we cannot tell our kids we're not testing our kids do all PE is outside right now and what we've done and I've asked our PE teacher since kids cannot change in a PE clothes we ask kids to just come and come with shoes that day we're doing very light. cuz I do not want the kids going to class sweaty I do not want kids sitting there and whether clothes are lunchtime activities are going to be completely curtailed once we start April 26th we're not going to allow kids to go down the blacktop and play cuz they can't share ball still at this point so that's going to be interesting lunch I'll be honest with you because the activity at miraleste at lunch time is the best time of the day and I like to get involved in that cuz I go down and shoot baskets with the kids all right Alduin not having them be able to have that bit of an outlet is going to be interesting to see how it all works so that's why we've short lunch from 40 minutes to 30 minutes so that kids can get their food to eat and then just kind of socialize a little bit at Social distancing another great question right now PE is very light don't want kids getting sweaty we do not use the pool because we can't change hopefully that changes in August but it may play just a couple more questions if we met when is the last day of school for this current school year and what is the first day of next school year I would have to look at wait where's my calendar and in the meantime I will try to look up the last day here cuz I know I have that one I do know that our Lifetouch pictures are August 20th and that's usually our first day of school but I don't want to be held to that date but a question while I'm looking for the end of the school year is regarding band and Orchestra are the wind instruments being allowed actually instruments can be outside okay we're not allowing anything inside but instruments can be outside so Mister reader has a system and which kids are going outside to actually going to start playing music here pretty soon right now he's just kind of getting the system together but he's real looking forward to it so am I the last day of school that I see is June 10th. That would be the last day of school this year June 10th the first day of school I want to say is is August 25th but I may be incorrect on that but I think that's the correct day I'm going that one off the top of my head except we have I believe answered all of the questions they were great thank you questions you guys I like I said you know where we are if you need us I know I get a lot of questions in the summer as to when schedules will be completed normally schedules are not completed until usually the second week in August so I suggest you hold off waiting about schedules and asking questions about that but again I ask you if you don't hear from me by that time if you're not getting emails from me with information session you need to get in touch with us that means I want to thank everybody for being here tonight I really appreciate your time Linda Kayla Trista you're awesome Trista by doing this for us thank you so much Karen Elisa your phenomenal love you I want to thank you all again have a great evening you safe I hope you have a wonderful wonderful summer
